Inside Lee & Associates’ Approach to Developing Houston’s Next CRE Talent
Houston has long been recognized as one of the nation's most dynamic commercial real estate markets. From its position as the energy capital of the world to its continued population growth, industrial expansion, and economic diversification, the city offers tremendous opportunities for both businesses and commercial real estate professionals. As the Houston market continues to evolve, developing the next generation of talent is one of the most important investments our industry can make.
At Lee & Associates - Houston, we view our summer internship program as more than a learning opportunity for students. It is a strategic investment in the future of our company and our industry. Through our Research Analyst Internship Program, we provide students with meaningful exposure to the many facets of commercial real estate and the critical role the industry plays in shaping Houston's future.
Rather than limiting interns to administrative tasks, we strive to provide hands on experiences. Through property tours, market research projects, client interactions, and collaboration with brokerage teams, interns gain firsthand exposure to the business while developing practical skills that extend far beyond the classroom.
"Commercial real estate is a business that is best learned through experience," said Mary Doetterl, Research Director at Lee & Associates. "Our internship program is designed to give students real exposure to the industry while helping them develop critical skills in market analysis, communication, and relationship building. We want them to leave with a deeper understanding of the opportunities available in commercial real estate and the confidence to pursue them."
The success of the program is reflected in the careers it has helped launch. Over the past three years, Lee & Associates - Houston has promoted nine former research analyst interns to Associate Broker roles, and one former intern has advanced to the position of Director. These accomplishments highlight the value of creating a structured pathway for emerging professionals to grow within the organization.
As Houston continues to attract new businesses, investment, and development, the demand for talented commercial real estate professionals will only increase. By providing mentorship, education, and real-world experience, firms can help cultivate the next generation of industry leaders while ensuring Houston remains one of the most vibrant commercial real estate markets in the country.
