TACOMA, WA (April 6, 2026) – A coworking concept that pairs flexible office space with on-site child care is set to become one of the first tenants at Tacoma’s newly redeveloped Old City Hall.

SheWorks, a workspace and child care community designed for working parents, has signed a lease for more than 5,600 square feet on the fourth floor of the 133-year-old landmark at 625 Commerce St. The company plans to open the location, its first, in fall 2026.

Founded by Ashley Whitney and Paddy Lei, SheWorks aims to address a persistent challenge for working families: access to reliable child care while maintaining professional flexibility. The Tacoma location will combine coworking memberships — which includes private offices, conference rooms and collaborative workspaces — with integrated child care services for kids ages 2½ to 6. The child care can accommodate up to 40 participants at a time.

Lee & Associates brokers Harrison Laird and John Bauder represented building owner Surge Co. in the transaction, while Briana Hickey of Neil Walter Co. represented the tenant.

“This is the kind of tenant that brings energy and purpose to a historic building,” Laird told the Business Journal. “SheWorks aligns with the evolving needs of today’s workforce.”

The 57,600-square-foot mixed-use building is slated to open in two phases. The first phase, on floors 2 through 4, includes restaurant, retail and offices space, and is expected to open this year. It's approximately 30% leased.
